The compact disc (CD) is a digital optical disc data storage format that was co-developed by Philips and Sony and released in 1982. The CD is an optical disc used to store digital data, originally developed for storing and playing back sound recordings exclusively. Later, the format was adapted for storage of data, video, and other multimedia types.

The first commercially available CD player was the Sony CDP-101, introduced in 1982. CDs and CD players completely replaced the phonograph record in popular music by the late 1980s. In 1988, the CD was upgraded to the CD-ROM standard to store data and reached huge popularity by the early 1990s.

CDs have a diameter of 120 millimetres (4.7 inches) and are usually 1.2 millimetres (0.047 inches) thick, with a 15 millimetres (0.59 inches) diameter central hole. The data layer is a 0.6 millimetres (0.024 inches) thick piece of dye-based recordable material sandwiched between two 1.2 millimetres (0.047 inches) thick transparent protective layers. Data is stored on a CD as a series of microscopic pits encoded in a spiral track molded into the top of the polycarbonate layer. A laser is used to read the pattern of pits and converts it into electrical signals.

The CD specification provides a capacity of 650 megabytes for storage, enough to store up to 74 minutes of standard audio or approximately 700 megabytes for storage, enough to store up to 80 minutes of standard audio. The information is stored and retrieved in a spiral track by a laser. Data is stored on the CD by changing the reflective properties of the dye layer by burning pits into it. These pits are then read back by the CD player's laser and converted into binary data.

CDs revolutionized the music industry, replacement the phonograph record for most popular music applications by the late 1980s. The smaller, more durable format with much higher-quality audio compared to vinyl records or cassette tapes quickly became the standard for music a storage and distribution.

In addition to music, CDs have been used to store other types of data, such as software, documents, and multimedia. The introduction of CD-ROMs in the late 1980s provided a new medium for storing and distributing computer data, quickly becoming a popular format for software distribution, digital encyclopedias, and other reference works.

Overall, the compact disc has had a significant impact on the music, computing, and entertainment industries, serving as a revolutionary data storage format that continues to be used today, even as newer technologies like DVDs and Blu-ray discs have emerged.
